When faced with a problem, who should you turn to? What if the problems are code-related? Who can help you improve your website development?
A Rubber Duck, that’s who.
Programming, Website Development and Ducks
Since 1992, rubber ducks have been a feature in programming. In what capacity? I hear you cry. Consultancy.
That’s right, rubber duck consultancy. I have my own rubber duck who I consult with daily on website development projects.
When a problem occurs in your code, look no further for answers than your trusty rubber duck.
Here’s a typical rubber duck exchange…
You explain to your duck what your code does.
Then, you go into fine detail and explain your code line-by-line. Get down and granular with the rubber duck. Be open, vocal and animated – forget your coworkers and their obvious concern.
The rubber duck will listen. Never judge. Stare right back at you, knowing the answer but not letting on.
Writing code means problem solving. A lot of problem solving.
Taking the time to talk to your rubber duck will help you. Feel free to babble on about your intentions, unleash your train of thought. Soon enough, you’ll realise that you’re taking your ideas in a new direction. Maybe, just maybe, the problem has a fix.
This is the eureka moment. A moment that the rubber duck has ushered in during its silent vigil.
What About People?
Sure, you may want to consult with coworkers or friends, but remember this: your duck is your mentor.
