Tools for our design agency
Here at Odes and Ink we use loads of digital tools. We become reliant on them and take them for granted sometime. We thought, why not give them some kudos and share their amazing qualities with some friends.
We all know the Xeros, the Buffers and the Dropboxes. But there are some amazing free tools out there able to help your workflow.
Here are a few we use:
Project Management – Freedcamp
This is a free project management tool with the option for subscription plans too. We use the free tool and have never felt limited. Giving clients access is a massive plus. It allows collaborative work on tasks, due dates and discussion.
You can link Google Drive, add extra widgets like time record and passwords.
The UI of Freedcamp is a genuine pleasure to use. Everything is well laid out and it always gives more than it takes.
(Creative) Note Taking – Milanote
This is fairly new to us, but, oh wow!
We’ve always craved an intuitive artboard-type, research-thingy note app. Well, Milanote is that.
It’s surprising easy to use. It has loads of functionality that enables complex ideation. You can export boards as a PDF and other document types. This helps with the presentation of moodboards to clients and research for projects.
As it’s still quite new to us, we’ve not yet unearthed all its power but Milanote is awesome!
This might not be new to some, but this is by far the biggest time saver for us. WhatsApp web allows you to use the app in your browser.
You can start new messages, reply using a desktop keyboard (big plus) – all without using your phone. We have trialled using it with clients to varying degrees of success.
Another bonus, is writing posts on WhatsApp web for things like Instagram. We’ll write the message on WhatsApp web, send it to our Odes and Ink group and then copy / paste into Instgram on our phone. BAM! No more 30 minutes Instagram write-athons.
Now, as a dyslexic creative, writing can be tough for me. I use Hemmingway Editor to help with my writing. It is so darn helpful.
You can use the free online version or you can buy the app for $10. We purchased the app and have it installed on all our machines.
Hemmingway will help improve your writing. It will tell you when you write in a passive manner. It will tell you when you sentences are too complex. We have found this tool to be great when writing for proposals. It will turn our drafts into lean succinct documents with accurate purpose.
Wellbeing – Flux
As a design agency this tool doesn’t help much when we’re in the throughs of photo editing. But when we have a full day of admin or proposal writing – Flux comes through.
The app adapts your computer’s display to the time of day. It helps with eye fatigue and improves your screen based on your environment.
Flux has a automated setting which changes your display at certain times of the day. Its free and very useful.
These are a few of many tools we use at Odes and Ink. We’d love to hear what everyone else uses or recommends. We’re always on the look out for ways to improve our workflow and work environment for the better.
